Dear Senator I am one of your constituents. As such, I strongly urge you to oppose SJ Res 14, which wrongly attempts to amend the Constitution to ban desecration of the U.S. flag. The proposed amendment would do catastrophic harm to the right to free speech which all human beings should possess, and which we still do possess. I strongly believe that the U.S. flag, or any flag, is simply a piece of colored cloth. Our flag is little different than any other, whether it be England's, Germany's, South Africa's, Cuba's or Iraq's. The characteristic which separates those pieces of cloth isn't the colors but the principles and beliefs which lie behind that cloth, and the men and women who uphold those beliefs. By approving this amendment, you would be saying that that cloth is more important than the principles. And by giving up those principles, the cloth looses all meaning, and is no better, no more valuable, than the white cloth I use to clean my desk. In the news and within Congress itself, there are appeals to patriotism to justify this action. I would willingly die for a just cause or defending my country against aggressors. I would never ever die for a piece of colored cloth. There are many ways to show our patriotism, Senator. Fighting against this amendment is one of mine. Please, Senator, vote against SJ Res 14. sincerely
